How to Find the Right Torquemaster® Plus Spring for Your Garage Door
Use this guide to confirm whether you have a Torquemaster® Plus system, understand left-hand and right-hand spring options, and match your door height and weight to the correct replacement spring.
Important: The spring charts below apply to Torquemaster® Plus systems only. Original Torquemaster® springs and Torquemaster® Plus springs are not interchangeable.
Torquemaster® vs. Torquemaster® Plus
Wayne Dalton has made two enclosed Torquemaster spring systems. Identifying which system you have is the first step because the springs are system-specific.
Torquemaster® Original
- Older enclosed spring design
- Uses smaller-diameter internal springs
- Limited spring options and lower cycle life
- Not compatible with Torquemaster® Plus springs
Torquemaster® Plus
- Newer, heavier-duty enclosed spring design
- Uses larger internal springs
- Improved balancing options and service life
- Requires Torquemaster® Plus-specific springs
Quick rule: Do not order based on appearance alone. Confirm the system type, door height, door weight, and spring configuration before selecting a part number.
What Is a Torquemaster® Plus Spring System?
Torquemaster® Plus springs are enclosed inside a steel tube mounted above the garage door. Instead of exposed torsion springs, the lifting force is created by internal springs matched to the door’s weight and height.
Because of this enclosed design, correct spring selection is critical. Wayne Dalton part numbers should be matched carefully to the correct door height, weight range, and spring setup.
How to Use the Torquemaster® Plus Spring Chart
Confirm your door height
Use the 7-foot chart for 7' doors and the 8-foot chart for 8' doors. Using the wrong height can result in poor door balance.
Look for the information sticker
Many Torquemaster® Plus systems include a factory sticker on or near the spring tube. It may list the door height, door weight, spring configuration, or original part numbers.
Determine the door weight
If the sticker is missing or unreadable, use the door weight and height to find the correct range in the chart.
Choose single or dual springs
Single spring options are typically right-hand wound and used on lighter doors. Dual spring sets use one left-hand and one right-hand spring and are used on heavier doors.

Understanding Left-Hand and Right-Hand Springs
Torquemaster® Plus systems require the correct winding direction. Left-hand wound springs install on the left side of the center bracket, while right-hand wound springs install on the right side.
Do not mix directions: Installing the wrong winding direction will prevent proper operation and can create a dangerous door balance issue.
What the Spring Specifications Mean
Each chart listing includes the Wayne Dalton part number, wire size, inside diameter, spring length, and winding direction. Torquemaster® Plus springs use a .650" inside diameter.
You do not need to calculate these values. The charts below already match the specifications to the correct door height and weight range.
