The Action Industries HA030-00-H Plunger Bumper Spring Set installs near the ends of a compatible overhead door’s horizontal track. When the door reaches the fully open position, the bumpers compress and store energy that helps push the door forward when the closing cycle begins.
This initial closing force is especially helpful on commercial doors operated by a jackshaft operator. It helps overcome the door’s tendency to remain fully open and supports proper tension on the lifting cables as the door starts moving toward the closed position.

How Plunger Bumpers Work
- The overhead door travels into the fully open position.
- The upper door section contacts and compresses the bumper springs.
- The compressed springs store a controlled amount of energy.
- When the operator begins closing the door, the bumpers push the door away from the fully open position.
- The door’s weight and counterbalance system then continue the closing cycle while maintaining proper cable tension.
Designed for Horizontal Track Contact: These bumpers are normally installed near the rear of the horizontal track where the door can contact and compress them in the fully open position. They are not intended to contact the door while it is traveling through the curved track.
Jackshaft Operator Benefit: A jackshaft operator applies rotational force directly to the torsion shaft rather than pulling the door with a ceiling-mounted trolley. On certain door configurations, bumper springs provide the initial movement needed to keep the cables tight while the shaft begins rotating in the closing direction.
Not a Counterbalance Spring: These plunger bumpers do not replace the garage door’s torsion springs, extension springs, or other counterbalance system. They provide only an initial closing force and must not be used to compensate for incorrect springs or an unbalanced door.
Mounting Hardware Notice: The set includes 12-gauge mounting brackets designed for use with 3/8-inch bolts. The seller does not provide a complete itemized list of bolts, nuts, washers, track clips, or other fasteners. Additional installation hardware may be required.
Installation and Adjustment
Install one bumper on each side of the horizontal track at equal distances from the door opening. Both bumpers should contact the door evenly and compress by approximately the same amount. The mounting position must provide sufficient force to begin closing without placing excessive pressure on the top section, rollers, hinges, or track.
Compatibility Notice
Verify the door type, track configuration, horizontal-track length, top-section position, operator type, door balance, cable-drum arrangement, cable tension, available mounting space, bumper compression distance, and structural support before ordering. These bumpers may not be suitable for every standard-lift, high-lift, vertical-lift, or low-headroom system.
Inspect the Door First: Loose cables at the fully open position can also be caused by incorrect cable drums, poor spring balance, improper limits, damaged track, worn rollers, incorrect high-lift geometry, or a door traveling too far. Diagnose and correct the underlying door condition before relying on bumper springs.
Safety Warning: Commercial overhead doors, torsion springs, lifting cables, cable drums, and plunger bumpers can store substantial mechanical energy. Disconnect and lock out the operator before installation. Secure the door, keep hands clear of the bumper travel area, and do not loosen springs, cables, drums, bottom brackets, or other components under tension.
